I’d almost reached Mossy Hills when I saw the battlefield covered in “bodies” straight ahead of me and pulled hard on the reins to stop Sist.

I turned my steed aside, and, having moved some 60 feet away, exhaled with relief. That was a close shave. I stayed in the saddle, examining what had recently been a battlefield, calling myself every name under the sun as I did so.

Noob! Moron! Wide-eyed idiot! How could I possibly have forgotten to take something absolutely essential for a traveler along?

My kingdom for a spyglass! In Waldyra it was imperative to have one handy.

Alternatively, you could buy the Eagle’s Eye—a relatively inexpensive spell that served the same purpose, but sapped away at your mana. Additionally, observing the terrain through a spyglass (or with the aid of a spell) gave one a specific achievement—you became an Observer. I never cared much about these achievements before. However, now that I had a diamond account, they gave me pretty decent bonuses. There were also many skills that could enhance one’s observational ability tremendously. A player with a well-selected and leveled-up set of skills could see a lot—not quite X-ray eyes, perhaps, but the next best thing, for sure.

Some of you might have already read its previous version released a while ago by another publisher under the title Cat’s Game. Players use astral ships to travel between worlds, otherwise they have to venture into the perilous underground tunnels of the Endless Paths. Dozens of powerful clans share this delicious pie, scheming or waging wars against each other.

The series’ main character is Cat, a wannabe merchant who specializes in procuring in-game valuables to sell them for real money. He is a Free Merchant, which is both his character’s class and his playing style - as well as his preferred problem-solving method. Cat is a cunning trickster who wriggles his way out of trouble thanks to his quick wit and his trading talents. His credo is, “Anyone can be bought provided the price is right”.

Cat starts from scratch, using every opportunity to advance his plans. This book is the story of a common trader’s rise to greatness until he becomes the world’s new legend, the most famous merchant in the entire Sphere of the Worlds.

The series focuses on the economics of a game world, including various trade methods such as regular and auction trading, as well as social and political interactions between clans and players. Plenty of intrigue and espionage, betrayal, trade wars, besieged castles and epic air battles of flying ships - all this has already made the fantastical universe of Rogue Merchant popular with thousands of Russian readers.

Clan Dominance: The Sleepless Ones by Dem Mikhailov is coming in less than a month. We talked to the author who's among the first ones to start writing LitRPG in Russia.

You were one of the genre’s founding fathers in Russia. Could you please tell us how it happened?

Well, I’m actually a veteran gamer. I started playing back in the 1980s, and as long as I remember myself, I always wanted to be able to travel to a game I particularly liked, to talk to my favorite characters and personally fight the villains. Over the years, this dream didn’t go away until it finally came true in my Valdira books. There, my characters don’t just play: they truly live their lives in that state-of-the-art full-immersion MMO game.

There’s a lot of discussion in the English-speaking world regarding the accuracy of the very term “LitRPG”. As one of the people who actually coined the word, do you think you could offer an alternative?

I don’t think it’s very accurate, either. By saying “RPG”, we presume that the reader takes an active part in the MC’s adventures instead of just reading about them being unable to influence the book’s events. At the time, I was trying to choose among several other options but didn’t manage to come up with anything better than this admittedly catchy soundbite.

Die Nachricht leuchtete in ätzendem Rot. Ich fühlte mich, als würde ich gleich den sprichwörtlichen roten Knopf drücken.

Das war ein weiterer, beträchtlicher Nachteil von „Täglicher Grind“-Konten. Das Bronze-Programm erlaubte einem, vom eigenen Computer aus auf seinen Char zuzugreifen, ohne in die Immersionskapsel steigen zu müssen. Auch wenn das einzige in diesem Modus verfügbare Feature das Dashboard des Spielers war, reichte dieses Tatsache schon aus, um sich freudig die Hände zu reiben.

Jetzt konnte ich wenigstens meine E-Mail abrufen und meine Screenshots auf einen Memostick speichern. Meine Mädchen hatten mich immer wieder bestürmt, ihnen Boris und Strolch zu zeigen, aber bisher war ich nie dazu gekommen.

Incoming call from Squirrel Derwin.

“So, it sank in? Great, now listen up. If you behave yourself, I’ll agree to trade your girl for a rainbow pearl. And nobody will get hurt.”

“You don’t need a unicorn, too, do you? The kind with butterflies fluttering around inside it, where they poop out caramels?” I replied angrily. Wart had called back just ten minutes after our first conversation, an eternity stretching out for me in the interim.

“Shut up! If you want your sister back, you’ll bring me a pearl. They had them in the pre-release, so you’ve got to be able to find them here, too. And you have nine days and twenty-three hours. If you make it in time, Squirrel lives. If not, she dies.”

“If she dies, you die,” I said with hatred in my voice, a fist pounding the wall in frustration.

“Oh, I couldn’t care less. Without the pearl, I won’t make it ten days, and I’m not going to die alone. You probably don’t want to know what I’ll do to this juicy little thing before I do, either. Are you picking up what I’m putting down, or do I need to give you a little motivation?”

Squirrel whimpered, Wart having apparently turned toward her.
